Russell Blaylock
aka Russell L. Blaylock, Dr. Russell Blaylock
Retired neurosurgeon and author of Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills, who argues that food additives such as MSG and aspartame cause neurological damage. Also expresses concerns about vaccine ingredients, fluoride in water supplies, and government health policies. Publishes a monthly health newsletter through Newsmax and sells branded supplements. His positions on excitotoxins and vaccine neurotoxicity go beyond the conclusions of major regulatory and scientific bodies.
Biography
Russell L. Blaylock was born on November 15, 1945, and earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his surgical internship and neurosurgical residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, was licensed to practice neurological surgery in North Carolina from 1977 to 2006, and served as a clinical assistant professor of neurosurgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Blaylock's transition from respected neurosurgeon to fringe figure began in 1994 with the publication of 'Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills,' in which he argued that food additives including MSG and aspartame cause neurological damage by over-stimulating neurons. The book became influential in alternative health communities and contributed significantly to the popular demonization of MSG, which persists decades after the scientific consensus established its safety. Blaylock subsequently wrote additional books on natural health, cancer, and supplements, building a following in natural health circles.
After retiring from neurosurgery, Blaylock has been primarily active as a writer, newsletter publisher, and Newsmax health contributor. His Blaylock Wellness Report newsletter, with approximately 28,000 subscribers paying around $55 annually, generates substantial revenue promoting supplement regimens and health fears. He has also developed and marketed his own branded supplement products, including 'Brain Repair Formula,' creating an obvious financial conflict of interest in his fear-based health messaging.
His positions have escalated over time into broader conspiracy territory. He has argued against H1N1 vaccination, opposed childhood vaccine schedules, and during the COVID-19 pandemic wrote that the pandemic was 'one of the most manipulated infectious disease events in history' and that COVID vaccines were 'dangerous, essentially untested experimental' injections — claims published in peer-reviewed journals that critics noted met negligible editorial standards. His willingness to attach his neurosurgical credentials to claims well outside his specialty — in fields including immunology, virology, and toxicology — represents a textbook case of credential misuse.

Claims & Debunking
“MSG and aspartame are neurotoxic 'excitotoxins' that damage the brain at normal dietary doses.”DEBUNKED
Regulatory bodies including the FDA, EFSA, and WHO have evaluated extensive safety data and found MSG and aspartame safe at normal dietary exposures. While glutamate is involved in neural signaling, the blood-brain barrier prevents dietary glutamate from reaching concentrations that would cause neurological damage. “COVID-19 vaccines are dangerous experimental injections and the pandemic was manipulated.”DEBUNKED
COVID-19 vaccines underwent clinical trials with tens of thousands of participants and were subsequently administered to billions of people with safety monitoring confirming an overwhelmingly favorable benefit-risk profile. Blaylock's claims that the pandemic was 'one of the most manipulated infectious disease events in history' and that vaccines are 'essentially untested' are contradicted by the
