Biography
Steve Mould is a British science presenter, author, and performer who holds a Master of Physics degree from the University of Oxford. He has been creating science content since 2006 and has built a YouTube channel of over 2.5 million subscribers focused on counterintuitive physical phenomena—the kind of observable behaviour that contradicts intuition and demands explanation. His background in physics gives his videos a level of analytical rigour unusual for entertainment-oriented science channels.
Mould is perhaps best known for popularising the "chain fountain" or "Mould effect": the observation that a chain of beads falling out of a container rises into the air above the rim before cascading down. His video demonstrating the phenomenon directly led Cambridge University physicists John Biggins and Mark Warner to investigate and publish their findings in the Proceedings of the Royal Society A—a rare instance of a YouTube video triggering formal academic research. This trajectory—from visual curiosity to peer-reviewed paper—illustrates the potential of high-quality science communication to genuinely advance scientific inquiry.
Mould co-founded the Festival of the Spoken Nerd in 2011 alongside mathematician Matt Parker and musician Helen Arney, a live touring show that has performed throughout the UK and internationally. He has appeared on numerous BBC programmes as a science expert and has authored science books for children and general audiences. His channel has surpassed one billion total views, a milestone that reflects both the breadth of his output and the consistent quality of his explanations.
