Seth Andrews
Real name: Seth Andrews
Former Christian radio broadcaster who became an atheist activist and hosts The Thinking Atheist podcast and YouTube channel. Author of five books including the memoir Deconverted.
Biography
Seth Andrews is an American atheist activist, author, podcaster, and public speaker born in 1968 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, into a devout Baptist family. He spent thirty years as a Christian and built a ten-year career as a professional Christian radio broadcaster before his faith collapsed under the weight of his own scrutiny. The catalyst was a debate he encountered in 2004 between Christopher Hitchens and Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, which crystallised a process of doubt that had been building since the death of a close friend in 1997. He publicly identified as an atheist shortly afterward.
Andrews founded The Thinking Atheist, an online community, podcast, and YouTube channel, positioning it as a counterpoint to the angry-atheist stereotype. The show features interviews, listener stories, and commentary on religion, science, and reason. He has authored five books, the most prominent of which is Deconverted: A Journey From Religion To Reason, a memoir of his exit from Christianity that has been widely read in deconversion communities. His broadcasting background gives his audio and video content a polished, professional quality that distinguishes it from much amateur skeptical media.
Andrews is a regular speaker at American Atheists conferences and other secular events. His work is notable for its empathetic treatment of people still inside religion — having lived it himself, he approaches the subject with understanding rather than contempt, making his content accessible to people questioning their faith as well as those who have already left it.
