Biography
Kurzgesagt (German for "in a nutshell") is a Munich-based animation and design studio founded in 2013 by Philipp Dettmer, shortly after he graduated from Munich University of Applied Sciences with a degree in information design. What began as a personal passion project—making science videos that were neither dry nor dumbed-down—grew into one of the most recognised science communication brands in the world, with over 24 million subscribers and videos available in more than a dozen languages.
The studio employs a team of writers, animators, and researchers who develop each video through an extensive production pipeline. Crucially, Kurzgesagt has been transparent about its fact-checking process: every script is reviewed by multiple subject-matter experts, and the channel has publicly removed videos that were found to contain errors or no longer reflected scientific consensus. In 2019, founder Philipp Dettmer published a meta-video explaining their process and acknowledging past mistakes—a level of accountability rare among large YouTube channels.
Dettmer also authored the book Immune: A Journey Into The Mysterious System That Keeps You Alive (2021), which became a bestseller and demonstrated the team's ability to translate complex biology for a general audience. Kurzgesagt represents a model for how rigorous science communication can be made beautiful and widely accessible without sacrificing accuracy.
