Alan Melikdjanian (born April 13, 1980) is a Latvian-born American filmmaker and YouTuber who creates the long-running web series Captain Disillusion, which began in 2007 and has accumulated over 272 million views. Born to Soviet-era circus performers of Armenian and Russian descent, Melikdjanian moved to the United States at age twelve and pursued a career in film, earning a BFA in Film Production from Miami International University of Art and Design, where his thesis film won a Best Thesis Director award. He founded his production company Amelik Entertainment in 2001 and has worked professionally as a video editor, director, and visual effects artist ever since.

The Captain Disillusion persona—delivered in full silver face paint with an elaborate superhero aesthetic—is a uniquely cinematic approach to skepticism. Rather than simply explaining why a viral video is fake, Melikdjanian produces short films that dissect the specific VFX and camera techniques used to create the illusion, demonstrating his professional expertise in real time. His targets have included viral videos claiming to show paranormal activity, UFOs, impossible physical feats, and various technology hoaxes. The production quality of his debunking videos is itself a statement: by showing exactly how the tricks are done, he gives viewers the tools to analyze future hoaxes independently.
