Biography
Alie Ward is an American science communicator, writer, and podcast host best known for Ologies with Alie Ward, a weekly science interview podcast that she launched in 2017. The show follows a simple but effective format: each episode, Ward interviews a working expert from a specific scientific field, usually focusing on niche or overlooked subfields like malacology, herpetology, or cetology. The show has consistently ranked among the top science podcasts on Apple Podcasts and was named Best Science Podcast at the 2025 iHeartRadio Podcast Awards.
Ward began her career as a science correspondent for CBS's Innovation Nation with Mo Rocca, a role she took on in 2014. Her work on that show earned her a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing Special Class in 2016. She also worked as a staff writer and editor at the Los Angeles Times and as an on-air contributor to KTLA. Ward has volunteered at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and co-founded the science communication collective Nerd Brigade. She also served as a consulting producer on Netflix's Ada Twist, Scientist, produced by Michelle and Barack Obama's Higher Ground Productions.
Time Magazine included Ologies in its list of the 100 Best Podcasts of All Time. Ward's approach to science communication emphasises warmth and genuine enthusiasm over authority, making her interviews feel accessible to listeners with no scientific background. By consistently centering the scientists themselves — rather than simplified explanations — she models intellectual curiosity as its own reward and helps audiences appreciate the breadth and specificity of scientific research.
