Biography

Grant Sanderson, operating under the name 3Blue1Brown, is a mathematician and science communicator who graduated from Stanford University in 2015 with a degree in mathematics. He worked briefly at Khan Academy before committing fully to 3Blue1Brown, a channel that has become one of the most respected mathematics education resources on the internet. His videos use bespoke animations—generated by Manim, an open-source Python library he wrote himself—to build geometric intuitions for topics that are typically taught through rote manipulation of symbols.

The distinctive approach of 3Blue1Brown is to show why mathematical ideas look the way they do, not merely how to use them. His series on linear algebra, calculus, neural networks, and Fourier transforms have been praised by mathematics professors and students alike for conveying genuine understanding rather than procedural fluency. The Manim library he created has itself become widely used by educators and science communicators around the world, a secondary contribution to mathematics education beyond his own videos.

Sanderson was appointed as a lecturer for MIT's Introduction to Computational Thinking course in 2020 and has given talks at MIT and other institutions. His channel has been cited in academic contexts as a model for how visualisation can transform mathematical pedagogy. He is also a contributor to the Numberphile and other collaborative mathematics YouTube projects, and has produced some of the clearest explanations of machine learning and artificial intelligence available to general audiences.
